Fall menu is about the richness in flavours
The fall menu welcomes New York restaurants...especially at Gramercy Tavern where the menu is full of squashes, mushrooms, hearty soups and pastas, and the smell of thyme, tarragon, sage and other wonderful herbs that make you salivate. It is one of my favourite times of the year for dining out. The food is rich, comfortable and full of flavour. The lunch at Gramercy Tavern was a highlight of my day. After a hard workout in the morning, I got ready and headed to Twentieth Street for my culinary adventure. The smell of apples welcomes you when you enter the small area before entering the restaurant, and the place resembles a small orchard in the fall.
Entering the restaurant, the smoky air and aromas from the tavern kitchen made my stomach growl, in the end I was hungry and very much looking forward to my lunch. I sat down with my friend Michaela who shares a passion and appreciation for great food with me. To warm up in this cool fall day, we started off with hot apple cider with dry apples and cinnamon stick. It was refreshing, sweet and spicy...it could be a meal alone.
The menu is so tempting to pig out, as there are so many delicious sounding items but we decided to stay calm and go with the flavours of fall. The journey started with Jerusalem Artichoke soup with butternut squash and aji dulce peppers. The soup was delicate, and had plenty of flavour that came from small baked potato rings. The main was not a surprise...it was simply delicious. We shared heirloom cauliflower with almonds, roasted in the tavern's oven, as well as mushroom lasagna that I can guarantee you that it is the lightest and the most delicious mushroom lasagna you have ever eaten, and the best part of eating it is that you don't feel like you have just swallowed a brick. Layers of delicate pasta sheets with plenty of mushrooms and ricotta, spiced with herbs make this dish simply superb. It is a melting pleasure in your mouth, and its lightness allows you to indulge yourself without guilty. Michaela had a lamb pappardelle served with olives and beet greens. It was a delicious dish for those who like lamb; as the taste and the smell is quite pronounced.
After all the delicacies, came the final act that most women are not going to miss and especially myself. However, remember that indulgence comes in moderation. I love food, but when it comes to desserts my weakness has to be fought or otherwise I will have to run an extra five miles for the sake of burning the extra calories. When you come to place like Gramercy, you cannot miss their delicious desserts especially my very favourite, unforgettable Coconut Tapioca. It has a creamy, smooth texture and the tapioca pops in your mouth. It is served with coconut and mango sorbets, and it makes your mouth water. We decided to also try the Chocolate Bread Pudding, and last but not least the Peanut Butter Semifredo. Both desserts are surely worth the mileage, but we just had a taste of them. It was the best combination of flavours and calories - close to a sugar overdose, but worth every bite.
