Summer - perfect the time for resolutions

Category: Diet

Last weekend, we welcomed the official beginning of summer – with hot and sunny days, a relaxed attitude towards work, a white dress for July 4th, long summer evenings with family and friends, and a season of fresh fruits, sweet corn and aromatic tomatoes. This is my favorite of all the seasons. I don't feel trapped indoors, and I feel that people are more friendly and open, and more relaxed and genuine towards others. The sun does wonders to our moods, and brings a healthy glow to our skin, as long as we limit exposure and protect with SPF.

Summer is also a perfect time to implement workout and diet (diet meaning lifestyle) changes and resolutions. It is so easy to get outside and just walk; it is the time to start a slow jog or slow strike swim in the pool or the lake/river/ocean. Take advantage of the long evenings of warm weather to try sports you always wanted to try. I am beginning tennis lessons with my four year old son. It has always been my dream to play tennis, and while I did so as a child, I never had the opportunity to play as an adult, even though several times I purchased a full outfit and a new racquet. It was one of the sports for which I felt I needed a lot of time to become good. But this summer I made a promise to fulfill my dream and go for it. I started with hitting the ball against the wall in my neighborhood and now I am heading for my first class. I believe that many people want to participate in their "dream sports," and if you have one in your mind this is your chance to begin, whether it is running, cycling, tennis, golf, kayaking etc., the long days and free spirit of summer bring the opportunity to begin.

In the next few months we will experience the joy of eating fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables. Summer is definitely the time to bring some color to our diet, and to eat healthy snacks and meals. It is the time to begin your weight loss resolutions – so much easier to do it when the sun improves your mood, and the summer brings all the delicious foods – local and fresh. Start your day with a bowl of fresh seasonal fruit offered by local farms, and mix it with plain yoghurt. Squeeze fresh watermelon juice, and drink it in the morning or throughout the day to satisfy your thirst and desire for sweet snacks. Watermelon contains many minerals that are excellent for our skin and help it glow! And if you add to the blender some blueberries with the watermelon you get an extra portion of antioxidants, Grab a handful of cherries, or a large sweet and juicy tree ripened peach or nectarine. In late August, indulge in the vast variety of plums, many of which help maintain healthy digestion.

Roast fresh young potatoes with garlic and sprinkle them with fresh dill, olive oil and sea salt. It is a delicious addition to grilled fish or steak. Marinate your fish and meat a few hours prior to grilling for extra flavour and juiciness. Eat tomatoes, especially fresh ones, sun baked and not from a hot house. They are excellent in taste, aromatic and contain plenty of goodness such as potassium. You can add tomatoes to salads and summer wraps (a healthier alternative to bread sandwiches), stew them, bake them, grill them, or eat them just like apples. Just make sure to satisfy your senses with the goodness of wonderful local summer produce before you return to imported winter groceries.

And don’t forget to move! move and move...every step counts! .

I wish you all wonderful summer and full of successful achievements.
