Sweet Memories of mulberries

Category: Diet

The power of goji berries has been known since their use in ancient Chinese medicine. They have properties which promote health and well being, and including goji berries in our diet offers many benefits. Goji berries have more antioxidants, vitamins and minerals than most fruits, and they are an excellent source of beta carotene. These ancient berries help cleanse your liver, boost your immune system, and promote fertility and sexual function in your body. They are a delicious snack or addition to your daily cooking.

The recent obsession with goodness from the Himalayas has led to the introduction of many products containing goji berries. One brand, Himalania, offers many ways to eat or drink goji berries...plain, chocolate or yoghurt covered, in liquid form etc. Himalania offers plenty of options to get a handful of goodness every day.

However, there is another wonder berry that I have enjoyed since I was a child, but never appreciated its benefits. Growing up in Poland, every summer kids spent the entire day outside while their grandmothers sat on benches, just like NYC nannies, overlooking their activities. Leaving the city was a privilege and a luxury that not many parents could afford. The rest of us played in gardens, went to public swimming pools, or to parks with man made ponds where dogs and children shared cool water in the summer heat. We spent a lot of time reading books, and playing cards; as well as helping our parents collect fruit to make compotes and preserves for the winter. Funny enough, we had only two TV channels with very limited programming for children, no computer games and no fancy toys to play with, but none of us was bored. Quite the opposite; there was never enough time for more fun.

I remember there was one tree that my friends and I loved - a tree near my grandmother’s building on Mahatmy Gandhiego Street. Each mid-summer the tree bloomed and produced thousands of black, super sweet and juicy fruit which melted in your mouth, and we ate so many of them that we often got sick. These were mulberries, in Polish known as morwy. We loved to eat them, and gathered around the tree and ate the fruit while playing cards. None of us was aware of the nutritional value of the fruit. Today, I visit Integral, my local health food store, to relive these memories, now in bulk and in dry form, but still delicious. Each time when I visit Warsaw, I go and look at the tree that provided many happy and "healthy" childhood memories.

Mulberries are becoming the next goji...it is an excellent source of iron, calcium, fiber and proteins, putting mulberry at the top of the charts. Eating mulberries promotes a healthy heart and longevity and helps to fight free radicals as mulberries have high level of Resveratrol. On ORAC scale that measures the amount of antioxidants in foods, mulberries stand very high.
